    Analysis of Silage Fermentation Characteristics Using Transflectance Measurements by Near Infrared Spectroscopy

    The fermentation end products as lactic acid, volatile fatty acids and ammonia-nitrogen, are important indicators of the efficiency of silage fermentation and are closely related to nutritive value of them (Jaster, 1995). Drying is problematic in the case of silage as many fermentation products are volatile and may get lost during the drying process. This may be a reason why NIR technology is being little used for the evaluation of silage fermentation characteristics. The feasibility of using near infrared transflectance spectroscopy to evaluate the content in fermentation end products of grass and maize fresh silage was investigated in this study

    A simple, fast and accurate screening method to estimate maize (Zea mays L) tolerance to drought at early stages

    There is a great need for the selection of plants with higher drought tolerance, so that fast and effective techniques to identify variations in drought tolerance are mandatory for screening large numbers of genotypes. This work presents a protocol for easy and reliable assessment of responses of maize genotypes to water stress conditions imposed during early stages of development. Three experiments using 11 commercial maize hybrids under four levels of water stress were carried out: i) germination, ii) seedling growth, and iii) early growth bioas- says. Constant and uniform water stress was imposed using solutions of polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG 6000). Plant material was evaluated for several morphological, physiological and biochemical traits and monitored for photosynthetic efficiency. Principal component analysis (PCA) of these joint experiments revealed that germination percentage, early root development and stomatal conductance were the most useful traits for discriminating maize hybrids according to their tolerance to water stress. A subsequent greenhouse assay performed with two hybrids with contrasting responses under soil drying conditions validated the previous results. According to our results, the key of drought tolerance was a rapid response of stomatal conductance, which allowed a longer survival to stress even under severe desiccation. This work provides the researcher with a simple and reliable screening method that could be implemented as a decision support tool in the selection of the most suitable genotypes for cultivation in areas where water availability is a problem, as well as for the selection of tolerant genotypes to early drought in breeding programs

    Assessing the value of a portable near infrared spectroscopy sensor for predicting pork meat quality traits of "asturcelta autochthonous swine breed

    Sixty-one intact meat samples from Asturcelta autochthonous swine breed were scanned in the slaughterhouse in reflectance mode. A handheld microelectromechanical system digital transform (Phazir1624, Polychromix Inc.), with a window sampling area of 0.8 × 1 cm and wavelengths ranging from 1,600 to 2,400 nm, was used. With the spectra database recorded were developed different chemometrical models assaying first and second derivatives as math treatment and standard normal variate (SNV) and multiplicative scatter correction for minimizing scattering effect. The greatest predictive capacity was achieved after applying SNV and first derivative for moisture, intramuscular fat (IMF) content, and pH parameters and second derivative for CIE L*, a*, b* colorimetric values, and the Warner-Bratzler force (instrumental texture). The coefficients of determination for calibration ranged from 0.63 to 0.89. The ratio between the standard error of the laboratory and the standard error of calibration ranged from 0.8 to 2.5 for all parameters (1.7 on average) with the exception of b and pH with ratios of 3.5 and 4.1, respectively. The statistical values obtained for the models developed to estimate IMF, CIE L*, a*, b*, moisture, and pH, displayed acceptable predictive capacity. For instrumental texture, the model could be able to discriminate among tender, medium, and hard meat in carcasses for characterization slaughter purposes. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York
